The Deck of Fate
Wondrous Item, Rare
This deck of ornate cards shows true craftsmanship, and is often protected by a metal or wooden box. Looking through the cards reveals beautiful and complex designs on the card faces, relating to the major arcana of the tarot - symbols often used by Diviners.
The magic of the deck is revealed when drawing a card at random. When a card is drawn in this way, the person drawing the card becomes subject to a magical effect corresponding to the card drawn. The card immediately fades to nothingness and disappears forever. A Deck of Fate found as treasure may already be missing cards, at DM discretion.
Legends have it that the original Deck of Fate was a gift from a Trickster God, bestowed to their followers in return for a great service. Scholars of such things believe that once the last of its magic is used, the Deck reforms somewhere else in the world, hidden away in dark corners or forgotten treasure hoards for the unwary to discover.
Beyond mere mechanical effects, the Deck of Fate may also twist events in ways that are not immediately obvious. For example, a character might think they have escaped Death a day or so after drawing the card, but the effects of the card may have wider consequences for the ongoing story if the DM so chooses, following the themes and symbolism of the card.
